Shelby Mayo, a woman from Phoenix, adopted a cute German Shepherd puppy when she was just 18-years old. She named her Ranger. Being the smallest among all the puppies, Mayo assumed that her dog was just the runt of the litter. She couldn’t wait for it to grow.
Months have passed, and she noticed that her pup did not grow. Nothing has changed with the way Ranger looked. Mayo decided to have her checked by the vet. She learned from that Ranger was infected with a parasite called Coccidia, which may have contributed to his stunted growth.
The veterinarian, however, also expressed his fear that it may be more than just the parasite affecting Ranger’s abnormal growth – or lack of growth thereof. He suspected the dog might have a condition called Pituitary Dwarfism. He explained that this is a rare genetic mutation that happens when a dog’s body does not produce enough growth hormones.
Mayo did not believe the vet at first. She still had high hopes that when Ranger finally hits his growth spurt, he would grow bigger. But Ranger’s condition began to worsen. He began to lose his appetite and weight, skin became dry and flaky, and his fur started falling out. Mayo began to accept that the symptoms are that of Pituitary Dwarfism.
Ever since Mayo got him, she had already been documenting Ranger’s growth on Instagram. He has gained a lot of followers. One of them, the Guardian’s Farm, sent Ranger goat milk soap, which helped his skin to a great extent.
Mayo is fully aware that even with the utmost level of care, her dog will still be prone to a lot of medical issues and may not live long. Most of the dogs with the same condition do not live past the age of five.
Ranger and his owner aren’t wasting time worrying about the future. The two-year-old dog is now still the size of a puppy, but this doesn’t bother him at all. He is as happy and playful as any other dog his age.
Ranger’s story continued to inspire animal lovers who became his Instagram followers. His page now has more than 120,000 followers and the Mayo’s plan to save all the proceeds for Ranger’s care.
