Carley Coca loves dogs. Not only is she a dog owner, but she fosters street dogs as well. Plus, when she has the time, she goes out and rescues strays too. So when she read online that three strays were found loitering near a church, she decided to help. Carley didn’t waste any time going to in Hillsborough County, Florida, where the church is located.

When she arrived in the area, she saw the three dogs, Zeus, Lily, and Chance. She approached the dogs with a treat in hands; the first two were easy enough to get near to. She had no problems carrying Zeus and Lilly and putting them in her car. Chance was a different story, though.

Chance of a lifetime

Whenever Carley would come near Chance, the dog would bark and run away. She could see that Chance didn’t trust her and was scared of her too. After several tries, she decided to bring the two dogs first to safety then come back for Chance another day.

Carley went back the very next day, scared that Chance might not be there anymore. But the dog was still there when she arrived. This time, Carley brought a cheeseburger with her. Maybe the dog would come near her if she used this tasty treat. Chance would eat the burger, keeping a distance between the two all the time.

Carley was persistent. She came back day after day. She hoped that with familiarity, Chance would finally trust her. On the sixth day, she saw some progress. When she arrived at the church, Chance was waiting for her at the usual spot where she would park. But it was only until the 8th day that Chance finally trusted her.

When Carley arrived at the Church, Chance ran towards her car. She hadn’t even gotten out yet, and the dog was already by her door. Carley stuck her hand out the window, and Chance licked her hand, tail wagging. She was finally able to carry the dog and bring him home with her.

Zeus and Lily were sent to a foster home, But Carley decided that Chance would stay with her. She would foster Chance herself and teach her how to trust people. She knew that if Chance would ever be put up for adoption, he needed to feel comfortable around humans first. She vowed to make sure that the dog would have a fighting chance.

Born and raised in the Midwest, I am a mom, business owner, and a lover of furry animals. There have always been four-footed furry pets in my life. Big or small, it seems I love them all! Most of my pets live long and happy lives and I have been fortunate to have several devoted friends thru the years from small Cocker Spaniels or Llasa Apso to the "let em take over your entire bed" black labs. Whether we buy them, breed them, or rescue them - however they come to our home, they are always welcomed into our family and soon take over a permanent place in our hearts.
